Is my LH (Luteinizing Hormone) normal?

What is a normal LH level?
LH is produced by the pituitary gland and triggers ovulation in women and stimulates testosterone production in men. Normal range in men is 1.7-8.6 mIU/mL. Like FSH, LH varies with menstrual cycle phase in women. The LH:FSH ratio is diagnostically important — an elevated ratio above 2:1 is associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
| Range | Values |
|---|---|
| Standard Reference | 1.7–8.6 mIU/mL |
What causes abnormal LH levels?
Elevated LH is caused by primary gonadal failure (menopause, testicular failure), PCOS (in women, with elevated LH:FSH ratio), and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor mutations. Low LH is caused by hypothalamic or pituitary dysfunction, hyperprolactinemia, anorexia or severe caloric restriction, chronic opioid use, anabolic steroid use (suppresses the entire HPG axis), and severe obesity.
When should you see a doctor?
See your doctor if LH is significantly elevated or depressed, especially with symptoms of hypogonadism (fatigue, low libido, erectile dysfunction, irregular periods, infertility). Men with low testosterone should always have LH checked to distinguish primary from secondary hypogonadism, as treatment differs.
LH and longevity
LH is a key node in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, which undergoes significant age-related changes. In men, LH gradually rises with age as testicular function declines — this is analogous to rising TSH in thyroid failure. In women, the perimenopausal LH surge and subsequent chronic elevation contribute to the metabolic and cardiovascular changes of menopause. Maintaining HPG axis health through exercise, sleep, body composition management, and stress reduction is a cornerstone of hormonal longevity.
