Is my MPV (Mean Platelet Volume) normal?

What is a normal MPV level?
MPV measures the average size of your platelets. Normal range is 7.5-11.5 fL. Larger platelets (high MPV) are younger and more metabolically active, with greater thrombotic potential. Low MPV indicates smaller, older platelets. MPV is useful for differentiating causes of thrombocytopenia and assessing platelet function.
| Range | Values |
|---|---|
| Standard Reference | 7.5–11.5 fL |
What causes abnormal MPV levels?
High MPV: immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), myeloproliferative disorders, diabetes, smoking, and acute blood loss. Low MPV: bone marrow failure (aplastic anemia, chemotherapy), Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, and hypersplenism. Anticoagulant type in the collection tube can affect MPV measurement.
When should you see a doctor?
See your doctor if MPV is significantly abnormal alongside an abnormal platelet count. Isolated MPV abnormalities with normal platelet count are generally less concerning but should be noted. Symptoms of platelet dysfunction — easy bruising, petechiae, prolonged bleeding — warrant urgent evaluation.
MPV and longevity
MPV is gaining attention as a marker of platelet reactivity and cardiovascular risk. Larger, more reactive platelets may contribute to arterial thrombosis, the proximate cause of most heart attacks and strokes. Emerging research links elevated MPV to diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and inflammatory states. While MPV is not yet a standard intervention target, it provides useful context alongside traditional cardiovascular risk markers.
